I’m a big fan of Maniratnam. And Kamal. And Surya. And Vettori. And,yea,it just seems to get longer and longer .But ,Maniratnam and Kamal are constant variables.
Love watching most of Maniratnam movies.Happened to watch Bombay again a few days back. What struck me is that most of Maniratnam’s heroines are the epitome of innocence ! Except for ,maybe,Simran in Kannathil Muthamittal or all the heroines of Aayutha Ezhuthu,.Only ,lately ,has he started to ‘empower’ the women in his movies with more than just innocence.Take Manisha in Bombay ,or Madhubala in Roja or Shobana in Thalapathi. Why are they all soooooooo innocent,to the point of annoyance ,sometimes ?? I think women should be more real in movies.More bold, more mature, more fun.Actually, perhaps ,this applies to most Tamil movies.Take,Genelia in Santhosh Subramaniam.Jeez..seriously,can someone like that exist at all ???
So,Tamil film industry, grow up . Stop painting the women in white.A few splashes of black wouldn’t hurt.
And respected people like Maniratnam should lead the way.
I disagree with what you have written. Will publish a post on this within a day or two
Lol, i was waiting for aparna to comment.. yaara paathu enna solraenga?
And again – i kind of disagree with you. See Revathi in Mounaragam, she was not the innocent. Its case by case and char by char.
The point is, you see the innocent part of the char that actually creates the case for the story.
Sappaya innocent na – see nayanthara in Villu. ipdi oru ponnu iruntha, even if its Nayanthara – i wouldnt even look at her !
@Aparna : I knew you would be the first to comment
) And I’m waiting to see the context-based post soon.Just a thought that crossed my mind when I saw Manisha in Bombay.
@Sreekrishnan : Havent seen Villu yet.Wouldn’t want to see it now after your comment ! I’m done with Superheroes and innocent heroines
The next movie I see will be Ayan, and then Asokavanam. The point is,whether such characters truly exist.IMHO,village belles are far more shrewd than the city ones!! And most village belles in movies are shown to be so goody-goody.
No ! … your point is wrong. No Girl in the world is innocent (Bulb glowing + Bodhi maram behind). Its just that they are at times ignorant of certain things – and comes across as innocence. Mani, uses that – to dramatize an event.

Genelia in Santhosh Subramaniam.. great point.. I seriously thought the heroine was mentally challenged at one point. I am so glad somebody else was annoyed by the characterization.
And Villu was a challenged movie in itself
