Terrorism is instant. Why can’t justice be so ?

What a movie ! Of course,I haven’t watched Wednesday yet.So ,without comparing the two,by itself,UPO was really good,Mohanlal’s malayali accent included.

Spoilsport : After the movie was over, spouse had only this to ask.Why do the guys who make the bombs use wires of different colors ? I thought a valuable moral could be got from this movie, but some people choose the smaller details .

Stepmom

I watched Stepmom twice.I loved the movie. It was subtle yet powerful.A movie that didn’t end with a  moral, a movie that didn’t potray the other woman as a vamp,or the husband as an infidel. No bucket loads of tears,no long tacky sentimental dialogues. It was beautiful. And ,now I dread to think what Karan Johar is going to do this gem of a movie.Supposedly ,Kajol makes Kareena nervous. And,together, all the three Ks are making me nervous. For once, let them get it right,God.

THE Movie Marathon

I know,I know. All I’ve been writing about for quite some time is movies. But when one has been away from something for a really long while and is suddenly given the chance to break that long break, one truly indulges oneself [ No prizes for counting the number of ones in that sentence.].

So finally, after 8 long months,I got a chance this weekend to watch most of the movies that I’ve been wanting to watch for real long.Naan Kadavul did the honors.Followed by 13B.Was pretty decent.Felt like all the horror, thriller movies that I’ve seen so far rolled into one.But it was nice .I liked it.Not too scary or gory.Works for me.And ,there were no unnecessary scary characters who simply pop their face into the camera just to give you the jitters.

Also waiting to watch Raman Thediya Seethai and Anjathey on TV tomorrow.

Anymore suggestions? I seem to have lost it for English movies of late.I just don’t know what are the ones I should watch and what I’ve missed.Any suggestions are welcome.

LOL

From Madagascar 2

This is the captain of your plane speaking.

I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that we are landing immediately.

The bad news is that we are crash landing.

Naan Kadavul

Whats the point ?

  • Aham Brahmasmi [The Self is Supreme ?]
  • Maranam Varam [ Death is a boon.Salvation from this wretched life. And,oh ,did they show wretched ! ]
  • What are you still looking for ??Thats it.

Halfway through the movie, spouse commented ” Ithu sariyaana pitchkaara padama irukkum polirukkey”.A little later,I said “Where’s the story, man ?”.At the end of the movie, spouse was growling Aham Brahmasmi every five minutes. He liked the movie so much.I’m still wondering what the fuss was all about. No strong storyline. Not my type.Though,I did look up stuff about Aghori Sadhus after watching the movie. It quite intrigued me that such people exist.

Innocence personified…irks me.

I’m a big fan of Maniratnam. And Kamal. And Surya. And Vettori. And,yea,it just seems to get longer and longer .But ,Maniratnam and Kamal are constant variables.

Love watching most of Maniratnam movies.Happened to watch Bombay again a few days back. What struck me is that most of Maniratnam’s heroines are the epitome of innocence ! Except for ,maybe,Simran in Kannathil Muthamittal or all the heroines of Aayutha Ezhuthu,.Only ,lately ,has he started to ‘empower’ the women in his movies with more than just innocence.Take Manisha in Bombay ,or Madhubala in Roja or Shobana in Thalapathi. Why are they all soooooooo innocent,to the point of annoyance ,sometimes ?? I think women should be more real in movies.More bold, more mature, more fun.Actually, perhaps ,this applies to most Tamil movies.Take,Genelia in Santhosh Subramaniam.Jeez..seriously,can someone like that exist at all ???

So,Tamil film industry, grow up . Stop painting the women in white.A few splashes of black wouldn’t hurt.
And respected people like Maniratnam should lead the way.

Bheema

Spoilers : Yes,the one and only one.

It was quite an experience watching Bheema.Ok.I’m neither giving a review nor an opinion.I would just like to jot down what transpired in the theater amongst our group and a few thoughts that ran through my mind while watching this movie .[There, now no one can blame me :-P ].At the very outset, you get to know its some gangwar, mafia kindof movie when in the opening scenes ,someone refers to someone else and someone else talks about someone else hiding somewhere else and generally using the word pottu thallu liberally. However,my interest piqued on seeing Vikram’s intro shot.Have to admit, that was one helluva scene. One terrific sideways angle to introduce yourself in.I tried myself to get that pose after coming back home[minus the biceps].Vikram really seemed to have worked out a lot to get into the body of the character.Hats off to you for that,Viks. But,my interest rate diminished as rapidly as it had increased in the following one hour when Vikram was busying bashing up goondas as though he was swatting flies. But,he seriously looked pretty convincing in his role, what with all those bulging biceps, triceps whatever. Then came the flashback. While Vikram was busy expressing how he found his role model and inspiration in Bheema, our little perverted minds here were reeling our own little so-gay Shekar-Chinna [Bheema-PrakashRaj] love story in our seats. What to do ?When theres so much bashing up and so thin a story line and dialogues like “Antha neram,en manasellaam Chinnaava pathi nenappu thaan “,we had to resort to somehow find a little [however perverted it sounds] story in there. So,thus,we laughed our heads off in the seats for a while and thus managed to entertain ourselves before the intermission. Then the story really started getting somewhere after that. And,I was very very happy with the climax.’Cos ,to me,it was unexpected. And,I felt all the three main protagonists deserved what they got. When Bheema songs had just been released,I didn’t find them all that great. But ,after watching the movie in the theater,I’ve started to like Mudhal Mazhai quite a bit.Not that the picturisation was excellent.Perhaps ,the songs were a welcome change in between all that pottu thallufying and thookufying.Trisha ,generally, looked gorgeous. And,seriously,is she becoming a comedy actress or what ? Nowadays, theres no separated comedy track in Trisha movies…Hmm.

There was a big split in opinion, though,in the group, about the movie. While half of us felt it wasn’t too bad,the other half felt the story was going nowhere. While three of us were very happy about the climax, the rest were disappointed that the director not only managed to finish off the three main protagonists, but, also the audience as well,in the process. But,definitely,my spouse was immensely enjoying all the hitting and the bashing [Wonder if its all his unfulfilled desires to whack me once in a while that led to this ??Heh.I hope not]. I can’t remember the last time I watched a tamil movie and came out thinking that “Now,that was a good movie”.Its either “Not bad” or “Can watch once”.Maniratnam, come back to Tamizh cinema.Gautham Menon, let Vaaranam Aayiram be a nice mature love story as you have potrayed in all your earlier movies.Dasavatharam, get released.Till then,I think I should stop going to the movies.

Taare Zameen Par

One of the best films of 2007 comes at the fag end of the year . And Aamir has vindicated himself (in my eyes :-P ) after the Mangal Pandey and Fanaa fiasco.

Its one of those rare movies which tug at your heart-strings ,leaves you moist-eyed at many a scene ,but puts a big smile on your face at the end :-) .

In Billa ..

…should NayanTara get a Lifetime Morachufying Achievement Award ? Did they not pay her for smiling ?

..in Malaysia,do even criminals get to wear Ray Ban and go to prison ? Ennaangada.

….I didn’t know you could put a bullet into a person and then come with the excuse “Sorry, naan theriyaama panniten” ? Lamest dialogue there, man.

….Was there an acute shortage of screenplay writers ? All dialogues were one word answers . “Varen”, “Poren”,”Panren.Naan Panren” ,”Sudren”.

..is it enough to just give a Hollywood-like glossy finish to a movie to raise it to Hollywood standards ? Nah,I don’t think so.Black and white suits and Ray Ban doesn’t maketh a Hollywood movie, man.

Saturday noon..

..ATM pogalaam variya ?” I agreed immediately. As I had nothing better to do .And as this was the first time since our arrival here that they were screening a Tamil movie in the city.Surprised on arriving at the theatre, there were more kids than adults.Looks like Vijay has a lot of next generation fans.Aprum,as usual, namma ooru makkal enga ponaalum maara maataanga. So there was a mad rush to get the tickets at the counter and in our group,I was somehow the chosen one.Somehow, holding my breath and bearing the immense pressure of all the vaandus around me ,I managed to get the tickets.I was rueing over my fate as to how ,for the first time in my life,I had bought tickets like this, and that too,for a Vijay movie. But ,I have to admit,I was pleasantly surprised. Mainly, because,

  • Vijay doesn’t become a collector or an IAS officer or a sub-inspector in the last five minutes of the movie. He remains what he was,at the beginning.
  • He doesn’t spout punch or thathuvam dialogues before hitting the villain [ was this because he himself was the villain as well ?Maybe].He doesn’t chastise the heroine for wearing too less clothes. There are no punch dialogues. Can it get better than that ?!!
  • There ,actually,is a little more than the age-old good guy-vs-bad goondas story. However incredible the story may sound,at least it makes for a little interesting viewing. And I really have to say to all those people who said the movie was illogical simply because it had ESP in it.Come on,if we can accept premonition in Final Destination and seeing dead people in sixth sense, why not ESP in a Vijay movie ? No double standards here ;-)
  • The music.Frankly, when I heard the songs earlier,I wasn’t too impressed. But its a totally different story when you watch it in the movie.I enjoyed the music.Especially,Valayapatti thavilley and Ponmagal Vanthaal.

What could have been avoided – Shakila [ Eww.Comedy doesn't have to be gross].The climax chasing scenes.Too impossible to even imagine and graphics was not that good either.Shreya looks gorgeous but I was really worried her skirts were going to fall off any time. They were dangerously low.And ,au contraire, Namitha’s were extremely high !Vijay’s intro song.Though the music was good and Vijay’s dance was good, the two didn’t quite gel together.

Verdict : Definitely better than his usual run-of-the-mill movies.
